While Protecting Elliot does mention characters from both the Barretti & Protectors series you don't have to know those characters to enjoy this one. I would recommend reading/listening to Saving Ren. It would help with the backstory and I enjoyed that Protecting Elliot, as well as Obsessed, helped resolve a minor issue involving Declan from Saving Ren. (If you're new to Sloane Kennedy, the Protectors series, or the fact that it intertwines with several other series - check out her handy chart and reading order on her website.) I've read through the series several times, but finally wrote out a review when I listened to the recently released (February 2020) audio.I struggle with novellas sometimes because they can seem somewhat incomplete. This is definitely insta-love and the ending is what amounts to an HFN over an HEA – but it’s still a satisfying read/listen. This book completely sets up the reader for Obsessed (released May 2020) and we get a little more of Elliot & Cruz’s HEA there.Micheal Dean’s narration is fantastic. I appreciate his ability to give each character in what is almost entirely an all male cast their own unique voice and mannerisms.I borrowed the ebook through Kindle Unlimited and later purchased my own copy. However, for full disclosure: I won a free copy of the audiobook from the narrator and am voluntarily updating my honest review. This novella in the Protectors Series is about 1/3 (or slightly less?) than the normal book in this series. It was a quick one, and takes place over a very short period of time. The storytelling was as solid as ever, and the characters of Cruz and Elliot were appealing. There is insty love, a mystery, steamy smexy times, enduring family love, and much more. I'm okay with this being short, but I know I would have enjoyed it as a longer book, too. I hope we see more of Cruz and Elliot, but I know how these things go. If we see them, it will be fleeting in someone else's book. Like Cruz's brother.I am a self-proclaimed expert on the Sloane Kennedy series of Finding, Protectors, Baretti Security, and even the Escort series. (They are all related. Not kidding. It's AMAZING how they inter-connect to please readers like me who love that, but not so convoluted that new readers are left confused. I have also now added the Twist of Fate series to my list AND of course Pelican Bay. You cannot go wrong with this author if you are a M/M romance fan.
